Hunter Lab Hand & Body Wash Review: Design-Forward, Citrus-Laced, and Built for Gifting
Hunter Lab Hand & Body Wash sits in the growing space between premium grooming product and design object. Made in Melbourne, Australia, it combines a citrus-led fragrance profile with a soft-touch bottle that feels intentionally designed rather than purely functional. We used it over multiple weeks to see whether the experience matched its premium positioning.

Formula & Skin Feel
The wash itself is a clear, gel-like formula with a slightly jelly-like consistency that feels reasonably concentrated in use. Around two pumps, approximately 6ml in total, was enough for a full wash.
Lather develops quickly but remains moderate rather than luxurious. Even in hard water, its ability to foam consistently was impressive. It feels more focused on cleansing performance than creating a rich shower experience.
After rinsing, skin felt comfortable and clean without noticeable tightness. While we wouldn’t describe it as particularly hydrating, neither of us felt the need to reach for moisturiser afterwards. The formula sits comfortably in the middle ground: effective enough to feel thorough, but not aggressive enough to leave skin feeling stripped.
Scent Profile
In the Bottle
Straight from the bottle, the scent feels unique and noticeably more masculine than many citrus-led body washes. The grapefruit is immediately apparent, bringing freshness and energy, but there’s something deeper underneath that gives it more weight than a typical citrus formulation.
On Wet Skin
On wet skin, the fragrance becomes sharper and more assertive. The citrus lifts quickly in the warmth of the shower, revealing an unusual boozy note beneath it. While Hunter Lab describes this as rum, what came through most strongly to us was something closer to vodka than spiced liqueur.
After Rinse
After washing hands, the scent sticks around just enough to catch every now and then. On the body, it fades much faster, generally disappearing within around 30 minutes, making this a fragrance experience that largely belongs to the shower itself rather than lingering beyond it.
Design & Shelf Presence
Design is where Hunter Lab makes its strongest impression. The bottle feels substantial in hand, with thick walls, a solid pump mechanism, and an unusual soft-touch finish that stands apart from almost every other body wash we’ve tested. The texture is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself, sitting somewhere between matte plastic and a velvet-like coating.
The faux woodgrain collar adds contrast without feeling gimmicky. Up close, you’re never going to mistake it for real timber, but it works well as part of the overall design language.
Restrained white-on-black typography keeps the presentation clean and contemporary, while the availability of replacement pumps and 1L refill packs adds a welcome layer of practicality.
Hunter Lab also ships the wash boxed and includes a branded fabric pouch, adding a gift-ready feel that reinforces the premium positioning.
One small drawback is that the soft-touch finish shows hard water marks quite easily, particularly in a shower environment. Fortunately, it cleans up quickly.
Would we leave it out on display? Absolutely. This is one of the better-looking bottles in the category.
Longevity & Value
At this level, expectations shift beyond basic cleansing performance.
Hunter Lab performs well, feels thoughtfully made, and presents beautifully. The formula is concentrated enough to avoid feeling wasteful, while the availability of refill packs supports longer-term use.
Where value becomes more complicated is the fragrance experience. The scent is memorable while you’re using it, but it doesn’t linger for particularly long afterwards. Whether that matters will depend on what you’re looking for from a premium body wash.
Would we buy it again? Probably. But that answer comes with an asterisk. Not because there’s anything wrong with it, but because the experience didn’t create an immediate desire to replace the bottle the moment it was empty.
Would we try another product from the range? Certainly. Hunter Lab’s design philosophy and approach to fragrance are interesting enough to make us curious about what else the brand can do.
Who It’s For
Hunter Lab Hand & Body Wash is best suited to buyers who place equal value on design and performance.
Its masculine-leaning fragrance profile will appeal to those looking for something more distinctive than a typical citrus body wash, while the bottle itself makes a strong case for permanent bathroom display.
Those seeking intense fragrance longevity may find themselves wanting more. Those who appreciate thoughtful design and a comfortable everyday cleanser are likely to get the most from it.
It feels particularly well suited to guest bathrooms, gifting, and design-conscious households where presentation forms part of the experience.
ATC Verdict: Is It Worth the Splurge?
Yes, particularly if presentation matters as much as performance.
Hunter Lab brings together thoughtful design, a comfortable formula, and a fragrance profile that feels more individual than most citrus-led body washes. The scent is enjoyable while you’re using it, the bottle remains one of the more attractive we’ve tested, and the overall experience feels considered from start to finish.
Its main limitation is longevity. While the fragrance performs well in the shower, it fades relatively quickly afterwards. For design-conscious buyers and thoughtful gifting, that may be a worthwhile trade-off. Those seeking a longer-lasting fragrance experience may be left wanting more.
Well designed, distinctive, and enjoyable to use. A fragrance we enjoyed more in the shower than after it.
Editor’s Note
This wash was used over several weeks in both hand and body rotation. We assessed scent behaviour, skin feel after rinsing, and how the overall experience compared to other premium cleansers in our collection.
