BunCoffee Australian Grown Review: Smooth, Low Acid, Best Black

BunCoffee Australian Grown coffee bag on black marble background

BunCoffee’s 100% Australian-grown beans from the Atherton Tablelands promise a smooth, low-acid cup with broad appeal. Positioned as gentle and easy on the stomach, it stands out as a rare locally grown option produced at scale. We tested it as espresso, both straight and as a milk-based cup, to see whether it delivers beyond its origin story.

Espresso (black), Espresso with milk + Equal (artificial sweetener)

Packaging

A matte turquoise pouch with a resealable top. Functional and unfussy, it keeps the focus on origin without leaning too heavily on lifestyle cues.

Aroma

Mild and clean, led by a soft nutty sweetness. No heavy roast or fruit-driven lift; cocoa notes sit over a dry, husk-like edge. The overall impression leans restrained.

Taste – Black

Taken straight, this is where the coffee settles most comfortably. Acidity stays low, bitterness is controlled, and the profile moves cleanly from start to finish.
Flavours remain subtle: cocoa, light cereal grain, and a restrained nuttiness that lingers toward the back of the palate. It prioritises drinkability over intensity, making it easy to return to across multiple cups.

Taste – With Milk and Equal

With milk and sweetener, the profile softens further. Those expecting a stronger café-style presence may find it fades too quickly, with the additions overtaking the base.
What remains is smooth and warm, but lacking the structure needed to hold its ground. Pleasant, though not especially distinctive.

ATC Verdict: Is It Worth the Splurge?

Yes, for the right drinker. As a low-acid, Australian-grown option, it delivers a calm, easygoing cup that suits regular, repeat drinking. It’s comfortable rather than expressive, and that will appeal to those who prefer subtlety over intensity.

As a daily option, it makes sense. As something to chase for flavour or café-style indulgence, it falls short of that mark.

A steady, easy-drinking roast that suits routine more than ritual.

Editor’s Note

This review is based on home use with the DeLonghi Magnifica Start espresso machine. The beans were tested across multiple sessions, both straight and with milk plus Equal, to assess consistency and behaviour.
