BunCoffee Australian Grown Review – Smooth, Low Acid, Best Black
This review looks at BunCoffee’s 100% Australian Grown offering—a smooth, low-acid roast sourced from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland. The brand positions it as gentle, slightly chocolaty, and easier on the stomach than most, making it a rare example of Australian-grown beans produced at scale. We tested it across a couple of brew styles, both black and with milk, to see whether this local option delivers beyond its origin story.

Packaging
A simple matte turquoise pouch with a resealable top. It’s easy to open, easy to store, and refreshingly unfussy. The design foregrounds Australian origin without leaning too heavily on sustainability language or lifestyle cues.
Aroma
Mild and clean, led by a gentle nutty sweetness. There’s no heavy roast character or fruit-driven complexity—just soft cocoa notes and a dry, husk-like edge. The aroma signals restraint rather than intensity.
Taste – Black
Taken black, the coffee shows its strengths. There’s no sharp acidity, bitterness, or aggressive roast edge—just a composed, medium-bodied cup that moves smoothly from first sip to finish. Flavours lean subtle rather than expressive: gentle cocoa, light cereal grain, and a restrained nuttiness that settles at the back of the palate. It prioritises drinkability over drama.
Taste – With Milk and Equal
With milk and sweetener added, the profile softens further. For those accustomed to a traditional latte punch, it may feel too subdued to assert itself, with the additions quickly overtaking the coffee’s natural character. The result is warm and smooth, but lacking presence. Pleasant enough—just not especially memorable.
ATC Verdict: Is It Worth the Splurge?
For black-coffee drinkers seeking a low-acid, Australian-grown option, this delivers a calm, easygoing experience. The mild profile makes it comfortable to drink in volume, and the brand’s positioning around gentleness will likely appeal to those who prefer a softer cup.
At this price point, it sits closer to a premium daily drinker than an indulgent specialty roast. If you take your coffee with milk and sweetener, it struggles to cut through and quickly fades. Not a flawed coffee—but one best suited to those who value ease and restraint over richness.
A gentle roast made for volume sippers, not café-style indulgence.
Editor’s Note
This review reflects our personal tasting experience using the DeLonghi Magnifica Start Coffee Machine at home. We tested the beans both black and with milk (plus Equal), using a standard espresso setting.
The product was purchased independently, and no part of this review was sponsored or gifted. As always, ATC reviews focus on what we actually tasted, how it felt to use—and whether it was worth the splurge.
