BunCoffee Australian Grown Review – Smooth, Low Acid, Best Black

BunCoffee Australian Grown coffee bag on black marble background

This review looks at BunCoffee’s 100% Australian Grown offering—a smooth, low-acid roast from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland. Pitched as gentle, slightly chocolaty, and easier on the stomach than most, it’s a rare example of Australian-grown beans done at scale. We tested it across a couple of brew styles, including black and with milk, to see whether this local option delivers more than just a patriotic label.

Packaging

Simple matte pouch in turquoise with a resealable top. Easy to open, close, and store—functional and unfussy. The label communicates the coffee’s Australian origin clearly, without overplaying the sustainability angle.Mild and clean with a faint nutty sweetness. No deep roastiness or fruit complexity—just a whisper of cocoa and dry husk. The kind of aroma that suggests smoothness, not intensity.

Aroma

Mild and clean with a faint nutty sweetness. No deep roastiness or fruit complexity—just a whisper of cocoa and dry husk. The kind of aroma that suggests smoothness, not intensity.

Taste – Black

Tasted neat, the coffee holds its balance well. There’s no sharp acidity, bitterness, or harsh roast edge—just a clean, medium-bodied cup that’s smooth from start to finish. The flavour is light but agreeable: gentle cocoa, faint cereal grain, and a soft nuttiness on the back palate. This is a coffee made for those who want ease over expression.

Taste – With Milk and Equal

Once milk and sweetener are added, the already-mild profile becomes even softer—too soft, in fact, for those used to a standard latte punch. The flavour is overtaken by the additions, leaving a drink that’s warm and smooth but lacking presence. It’s inoffensive, but not satisfying.

ATC Verdict: Is It Worth the Splurge?

For black coffee drinkers looking for a low-acid, low-caffeine, Australian-grown roast, this offers a clean and calm experience. It’s smooth, mild, and easy to sip in volume—especially if your gut doesn’t handle acidity well.

But if you prefer your coffee with milk and sugar, it doesn’t hold up. Too mild to cut through, too soft to feel indulgent. It’s not a bad coffee—but for our palate, it fades fast.

A gentle roast made for volume sippers, not café-style indulgence.

Editor’s Note

This review reflects our personal tasting experience using the DeLonghi Magnifica Start Coffee Machine at home. We tested the beans both black and with milk (plus Equal), using a standard espresso setting.

The product was purchased independently, and no part of this review was sponsored or gifted. As always, ATC reviews focus on what we actually tasted, how it felt to use—and whether it was worth the splurge.
